Skyline Caverns is one of the closest caverns to Washington, DC (the closest located in VA) and is a great option for a quick visit to some amazing underground sights! It is located just one mile from the north entrance of Shenandoah National Park, on the edge of Front Royal, Virginia.
When to Visit
This is a perfect outing for any time of the year. Temperatures inside the caverns are a mild 54 degrees year-round, so even during the freezing temperatures of winter or the scorching heat of summer, Skyline Caverns is a comfortable excursion.
Skyline offers the most up-close experience from among other major caverns in the Northwestern region of Virginia. As you work your way through the caverns, you will get to have the experience of tunneling your way through the caverns, as opposed to simply walking along a pathway in wide-open spaces. Of course, there are still a handful of open areas within the caverns to take in all of it’s glory!
The most unique thing about Skyline Caverns is that they are home to a remarkable crystal called anthodites. These crystals are quite rare and are found in only a few caves throughout the world. (No cheating with photos here…You will have to visit to see what they look like!)
What to Know Before You Go
- There is no elevator in these caverns, so visitors must be able to climb up and down stairs. Don’t worry…it’s not too far down! But those with accessibility issues may have to think twice before visiting.
- Photography (including flash) is permissible, so bring your cameras! There was an adorable little girl on my tour with an iPod taking tons of photos. This is a great way to keep your little one engaged!
- It is cool and damp, so dress in layers and bring a sweatshirt or light jacket. And of course, good walking shoes are a must! It can get slippery, so be careful.

Remembering your Visit
After your tour you can bring home your very own crystal! The gift shop has geodes that you can break open, revealing a beautiful treasure inside.
Of course, every young cave explorer needs a hat! These, along with other trinkets, can be found in the gift shop.
For the Kids
Bring along this Scavenger Hunt sheet and when it’s complete, bring it to the ticket counter for a special cavern sticker.
In addition to the caverns, there is a one-fifth scale miniature train, the Skyline Arrow, that kids would probably enjoy! (It was closed for the season when I visited, but will open back up in the Spring.)
Enjoy your Visit!
